Enphase IQ Battery: low charge — what it means and what to do
Your Enphase IQ Battery has a low state of charge. During a power outage the battery shuts down at its configured shutdown level to conserve energy, and it restarts when solar power is available or the grid returns. This is not a fault by itself. Reduce the load, wait for solar or grid power, and check the Enphase App.

What we see across our fleet
- We have seen this fault on 22 Enphase systems, 0.4% of the 4,980 Enphase systems we monitor (last 12 months).
- Source: Otovo fleet monitoring and service records, data through October 2026.
Common causes
- A long power outage drained the battery.
- A large load, such as an air conditioner or dryer, used a lot of stored energy.
- Little sun limited recharging.
- The reserve or shutdown level in the app is set differently than you expected.
- The gateway is not communicating, so the app shows old data.
Safe steps to try
- Check the Enphase App Note the state of charge and whether the system is in an outage.
- Turn off large appliances Enphase says to turn off appliances and circuits so the system can recover when solar production is available.
- Wait for sun or grid power The guide says the battery restarts automatically using conserved energy when solar is available or the grid restores power.
- Check the gateway Make sure the IQ Gateway is on and reporting. The guide says the batteries will not discharge if it is off.
- Review your reserve setting In a backup-enabled system you can review the reserve capacity in the Enphase App.
When to call a professional
Call a professional if the battery does not recover once solar or grid power is back. If you ever see swelling, heat, smell or smoke from the battery, keep away from it, switch it off only if you can do so safely as described in your manual, and call a professional. Otovo services these systems and can diagnose this fault.
Frequently asked questions
- Is a low charge a fault?
- No. It describes the battery level. In an outage the battery shuts down at its configured level.
- Will it restart by itself?
- Enphase states it restarts automatically when solar power is available or the grid restores power.
- Can I change the reserve?
- In a backup-enabled system you can edit the reserve capacity in the Enphase App.
