SolarEdge power optimizer: no communication — what it means

This alert means a power optimizer, the small device at a panel, is not sending data to the monitoring platform. SolarEdge lists shading and connection problems among the things to check. Look at the monitoring layout to see which one, note it, and contact a professional.

What we see across our fleet

  • We have seen this fault on 635 SolarEdge systems, 7.2% of the 8,871 SolarEdge systems we monitor (last 12 months).
  • Once it appears, the system usually clears it in about 143.6 hours (median), and 1.2% clear within 24 hours.
  • Replacement cases on record involve these SolarEdge models: U650-1GM4MRMU-A05 (371), USE11400H-USSKBEZ8 (365), SE7600H-USMNUBL75 (118), NX13000T-US00UCYN4 (84), SE10000H-USMNUBL75 (61).

Common causes

  • The panel is shaded or covered, so the optimizer is not active.
  • A loose or disconnected optimizer, module, or string connection.
  • The optimizer has malfunctioned.
  • The inverter needs to be paired again with its optimizers.

Safe steps to try

  1. Note the alert Record the alert text and time in the SolarEdge app or portal.
  2. Look at the layout In the monitoring platform, open the layout view to see which panel or string is not reporting, and write it down for a technician.
  3. Check for shade or cover From the ground, see whether snow, leaves, or a new shadow is covering a panel. Do not climb on the roof or touch panels.
  4. Wait for daylight Optimizers report only when the panels receive light. Check again in full sun before deciding the alert is real.

When to call a professional

Otovo services these systems and can diagnose this fault for you. Call if the same optimizer keeps failing to report in full sun. Pairing and checking connections should be done only by a qualified installer.

Frequently asked questions

Is this dangerous?
The alert itself is not a safety warning. Do not touch the optimizers, wiring, or panels yourself.
Why does it only show up some days?
Shading can cause it, and optimizers need sunlight to report.
Will the rest of my system keep producing?
Other optimizers continue to operate, but the affected panel's production may be lost or reduced until it is fixed.
