Tesla Powerwall Device Offline: what it means and what to do

"Device Offline" in the Tesla app means your Powerwall system has lost its internet connection, so the app cannot show recent power flow or energy data. Tesla's troubleshooting page also calls this Gateway Offline: the power flow screen is grayed out or blank, or the Gateway beeps. Powerwall keeps running in its last mode and still backs up your home during an outage; you only lose remote monitoring and software updates.

Common causes

  • Your Wi-Fi network name or password changed, or you replaced your router.
  • The Wi-Fi signal at the Gateway or Powerwall is weak. Tesla asks for at least two bars next to the Gateway.
  • The cellular backup connection dropped. The first-generation Gateway 1 lost cellular service when 3G networks shut down.
  • Your home internet service is down, for example during a grid outage.

Safe steps to try

  1. Confirm your home internet works Check that other devices in the house can get online. If the whole house is offline, restart your router or contact your internet provider first.
  2. Use the Device Offline banner in the Tesla app Stand next to your Powerwall and Gateway. In the Tesla app, open your energy site, go to Settings and select Configure Wi-Fi (on Powerwall 3, tap Device Offline and select Powerwall 3). Follow the in-app steps, which use the QR code or serial number on your equipment, then pick your home network and enter the password.
  3. Reset the Gateway if the connection fails Tesla's Wi-Fi guide says to reset the Gateway and wait five minutes before trying again. On Gateway 2, press the reset button behind the glass door for about one second; on Gateway 1, the button is behind the metal door. This only reboots the Gateway and does not change your settings.
  4. Check the signal strength Tesla needs two to three bars of Wi-Fi at the Gateway. If the signal is weak, consider a Wi-Fi extender or powerline adapter that supports 10/100 Mbps.
  5. Run Tesla's troubleshooter If the app still shows Device Offline, use the Troubleshoot button under Gateway Offline on Tesla's Powerwall troubleshooting page. It signs you in and walks through the remaining checks before connecting you to support.

When to call a professional

Call Tesla support or your installer if the system has not started reporting within 24 hours of reconnecting to Wi-Fi, if the Gateway keeps beeping, or if you would like a wired ethernet connection added. Ethernet is installed inside the Gateway wiring area, so it must be done by an installer. Do not troubleshoot during a grid outage or extreme weather.

Frequently asked questions

Does Powerwall still work while it shows Device Offline?
Yes. Tesla says a Powerwall without internet continues in its last operating mode and still provides backup power during an outage. You lose app monitoring, alerts and over-the-air software updates.
Can being offline affect my warranty?
Tesla notes that extended periods without an internet connection prevent software updates and may impact the product warranty, so it is worth reconnecting promptly.
Which Wi-Fi networks does Powerwall support?
Tesla's Wi-Fi setup page lists 2.4 GHz networks with WEP, WPA or WPA2 personal security, including hidden networks. Captive portals (like hotel-style login pages) and enterprise security are not supported.
Why did my Powerwall go offline during a power outage?
Your router and modem may lose power or your internet provider may be down during an outage. Tesla's alerts page notes that the app may not receive notifications then, but Powerwall is expected to operate normally.
