Tesla fault guides
Plain answers to the fault codes and alerts we see most often on solar systems, with what our own monitoring and service records show.
- Tesla Powerwall Breaker Open alert: what it means and what to do
A "Breaker Open" alert in the Tesla app means the AC breaker that connects your Powerwall to your home electrical system is off, so Powerwall is disconnected and cannot store or supply energy. Tesla says another sign is that the LED light on the right side of the Powerwall does not turn on. The breaker needs to be switched back on, but only if there are no signs of heat damage.
- Tesla Powerwall Device Offline: what it means and what to do
"Device Offline" in the Tesla app means your Powerwall system has lost its internet connection, so the app cannot show recent power flow or energy data. Tesla's troubleshooting page also calls this Gateway Offline: the power flow screen is grayed out or blank, or the Gateway beeps. Powerwall keeps running in its last mode and still backs up your home during an outage; you only lose remote monitoring and software updates.
- Tesla Powerwall Disabled alert: what it means and what to do
"Powerwall Disabled" with the banner "Service Required - Fault Detected" means one or more Powerwall functions have been switched off because of an internal fault that requires replacement. Tesla's instruction is to turn off the Powerwall enable switch and contact your installer to schedule a replacement.
- Tesla Powerwall Meter Offline: what it means and what to do
"Meter Offline" means one of the energy meters in your Tesla system has stopped reporting, so the Tesla app cannot show some or all of your power flows. Tesla lists the signs as part of the power flow data missing, the battery level stuck at 0% for several days, or the battery below 10% and not charging. Tesla lists a battery stuck at a low charge as one of the signs.
- Tesla Powerwall Waiting for Solar: what it means and what to do
"Waiting for Solar" means Powerwall ran too low on energy during a grid outage and stopped powering your home. Tesla says it will check for solar every hour in daylight and resume once there is enough sun to power the home and charge. If those retries fail you may see "Waiting for User Input" and then "Waiting for Grid". A related alert, "Powerwall Overloaded", means your home asked for more power than Powerwall can supply.
- Tesla Solar Production Limited alert: what it means and what to do
"Solar Production Limited" with the banner "Service Required - Fault Detected" means one of your inverters may not be producing solar because a fault was detected in your solar system. Tesla's instruction is to contact your installer to schedule a site visit.
