# Generac PWRcell Island Overload: what it means and what to do

"Island Overload" on the Generac PWRcell inverter screen means that during a grid outage your home tried to draw more power than the PWRcell system can supply. The inverter protects itself by shutting off power and retrying at increasing intervals, so backup power cycles on and off. Generac says the inverter light alternates between blinking green and solid red.

## Common causes

- Too many household loads running at once during an outage.
- Too much load on the protected loads panel.
- Low battery state of charge, which Generac says makes the system more vulnerable to voltage overloads.

## Safe steps to try

1. **Turn off large loads** Generac's fix is to reduce house loads. Switch off air conditioning, electric heaters, ovens, dryers, well pumps and EV charging.
2. **Wait for the retry** The inverter retries automatically, starting about 20 seconds after an overload and waiting longer after each attempt. With loads reduced it should recover.
3. **Add loads back slowly** Once power is stable, turn appliances back on one at a time.

## When to call a professional

If backup keeps cycling with only small loads on, or your backup panel includes loads too big for the system, ask your installer to review which circuits are backed up.

## Frequently asked questions

### Why did my system turn off overnight during a long outage?

Generac says the battery may have reached its minimum charge and gone to sleep. It wakes every hour for about four minutes to look for solar power and resumes when it finds enough.

### Does Island Overload damage the system?

It is a protective response. The inverter shuts off to protect itself and retries.
